For years, Kalamazoo Sports Camps has offered some of the most highly-rated youth sports camps in the West Michigan area. The majority of our camps are held at the first-class facilities of Kalamazoo College, although we do sometimes offer our programs at satellite locations around the West Michigan area.
Kalamazoo Sports Camps was formed nearly 5 years ago by some of the head coaches at Kalamazoo College, in order to make the camp experience (i.e. gathering of information, registration, administration, and camp itself) a simpler and more user-friendly process for our participants and their families. Since that time, we have reorganized and become a separate entity which continues to use the college's facilities, and we have proudly offered some of the best summer sports programs for kids in the West Michigan area--receiving a great deal of positive feedback from local families.
What Sets Us Apart?
STAFF
Our program director possesses two decades of experience as a coach and educator. She has served as a head college soccer coach at both Kalamazoo College and Rhodes College, and as an assistant coach at Western Michigan University. She also has experience working with youth athletes of all ages, as her resume includes time as a high school varsity coach, as a youth/club coach, and as a recreational league coach. As such, she has a solid understanding of the needs of youth athletes at all ages. She ensures that the best coaching staff available in West Michigan is assembled for each sport/camp offered (typical staffs include other college coaches, high school coaches, and licensed club/AAU coaches... as well as current college players with coaching experience and/or licensing).
FACILITIES
At all Kalamazoo College-based camps, the campus dining facility, swimming pool, and movie theater are on-site and available for use, so as to offer full-day and residential campers various off-the-field/court activity options in the afternoons when the weather is hot and breaks are needed. Furthermore, all on-field/court camp sessions/activities take place on collegiate-level game fields/courts. Any camps held at satellite locations are chosen based on the quality of the facilities/playing surfaces available.
PHILOSOPHY
Kalamazoo Sports Camps believes that learning a sport should be fun, engaging, and challenging... and that teaching methods should be tailored to each camper's level of ability and experience. We ensure that campers are placed in fun and competitive situations, in which new skills can be practiced in a safe environment.
Why does it appear that Kalamazoo Sports Camps is just offering soccer & basketball camps this year?
A.
While we do have tentative plans to re-introduce additional sports to our summer camp offerings next year (2011) and beyond, we are committed to only offering programs for sports in which we can secure knowledgable camp directors and assemble the best coaching staffs available in the West Michigan area. After taking a 1-year hiatus in 2009 to reorganize our operations, we are "starting" small in 2010.
Q.
What happened to the other sports that were available in previous years?
A.
In the past, Kalamazoo Sports Camps acted as a "point man" in the administration of numerous camps run by Kalamazoo College's head coaches; as such, our camp offerings were dependent upon which of the college coaches chose to run camp in any given year (i.e. our offerings in previous years included soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball). In the summer of 2009, however, new policies set by the college regarding facility use led Kalamazoo Sports Camps to reorganize (hence, our 1-year hiatus in 2009). At this time, we now function as a separate entity and our camp offerings are no longer dictated solely by the decisions of the college's coaches.
